A foley artist is someone who recreates sounds for films and television by using props, this do works better because sounds are often lost in ambient sounds and dialogue. The order is to normally to do all of the main characters first and recreate their sounds for example footsteps and then to go on to to the other characters. Then foley artists go on to do a thing called "prop pass" which means to go through all of the clips and recreate the sound of pretty much anything that moves. Foley artists should be energetic and be switched and have a creative mind to listen out for different sounds and objects they can use to make different sounds. Any sound can be made with any object such as shoes boxes chains ect.The advantage of using real objects to create sound effects over digital sounds is that it sounds so much more realistic because the sound is made by real objects and it will work better to tell a story of a film. Also digital sounds are harder to find and fit in exactly with what is going on in the clip whereas if you record the sound while the clip is playing you can get it spot on. For a specific example of how sounds are created... in Star Wars they made the sound of lasers by hitting the wires of a radio tower with a spanner to create the realistic sound of the lasers.
