DESCRIPTION
Matte painting is a way of combining two or more image elements into one when trying to make films or photographers. It's used in photography and special effect film making. It starts off with two images... the actors on the set, and the image of the city, to combine into a third. This would mean using two masks/mattes. This is an example of a static matte where you would use in photography but in film where the raw footage is obviously moving you use "travelling mattes". This is where you're doing the same thing but telling it to move with the raw footage, it's much harder than the static matte.

HISTORY
Mattes are a very old technique. Originally, the matte shot was created by filmmakers. When the live action was filmed, the background portion of the film wasn't exposed. Once the live action was filmed, a different cut-out would be placed over the live action. The film would be rewound, and the filmmakers would film their new background. The first major development of the matte shot was the early 1900s. Now, instead of taking their live action footage to a real location, filmmakers would shoot the live action as before, then rewind the film and transfer it onto a camera. Then they would use the glass instead of live action as the background. Going from live action to the painted background made it less jumpy. The down side to this method was the fact you could easily overexpose the film which would then ruin the whole shoot earlier on.

They use mattes in Mary Poppins to make one of the scenes look animation and like the two characters were with animated penguins. They're made the background with matte painting for a reason i think to make it look different and like they were in a different world. I think it works well as it looks realistic if it was a animation world with animated animals but if it was going for a real world look it doesn't look proper at all. Matte painting is used a lot in Mary Poppins and it does work well as it's a very popular film and has been for a long time.
